SEO for fashion and beauty e-commerce: category pages that rank and sell

Most shoppers do not search for your brand name. They search for “linen shirt dress” or “vitamin C serum for dry skin”. On a fashion or beauty store, the category page is where those searches land, so it deserves the most care.

1. Give every category one clear search intent

One page, one idea. “Women’s boots” and “ankle boots” can be two pages if people really search for them separately, but not if they show the same products. Look at search suggestions and at your own site search, then name categories with the words customers use. Keep the creative collection names for the campaign.

2. Write a short intro and keep the products visible

Two or three useful sentences above the products tell search engines and shoppers what the page is about. A longer guide, such as how to choose a foundation shade, can sit below the products. Write it for a person, not for a list of keywords.

3. Treat a product page like a lookbook caption

Supplier text copied across many stores is the quickest way to look like everyone else. For fashion, describe fit, fabric, care and how the piece is worn. For beauty, add ingredients, skin or hair type, how to use it and what to expect.

I have designed handmade lookbooks and still life shoots for a fashion brand, and a product page works best in the same way: the photo and the words answer the same questions. Describe each image in the alt text with a sentence a person would find useful.

4. Decide which filtered pages deserve to exist

Filters for colour, size, price and brand can create thousands of near-identical URLs. Pick the few combinations people really search, such as “black leather ankle boots”, and give them a proper page. Keep the rest out of the index with canonical tags or noindex, and check Search Console to see what Google actually crawls.

5. Add structured data and keep it honest

Product markup with price, availability and reviews helps search engines show richer results. Mark up only reviews written by real customers, and keep the price and stock in the markup identical to the page.

6. Handle seasonal and sold-out pages with care

Keep seasonal category URLs year after year, so they build authority instead of starting from zero. For a discontinued product, redirect to the closest alternative or keep the page with links to similar items. Deleting it creates an error and wastes the links it earned.

Last, compress images, use a modern format and reserve their space, so the page loads fast and does not jump on a phone.

The takeaway

Start with your ten most important categories: one intent each, a short useful intro and products that load fast on a phone. If your store runs in more than one language, read my guide to multilingual SEO, and for how AI tools read your site, the article on SEO for AI search.
